But it's not really a Japanese-Horror-esque type of tale. I was being honest when I said I haven't seen a single one of those types of films.
That's why it's got the 'esque on the end, it's your own individual take on a ghost story type setting very popular in Japanese lit. I can't wait to see you making it your own :) By not seeing the originals I am sure there will be lots of interesting twists and turns.
Haunted houses are popular in every culture, but the Japanese are very keen on their family Grudge type situation where a curse lingers in a house due to a family incident.
We don't get for example films like that UK film with the possessed TV and graveyard under the building. (Poltergeist?). Instead, usually it's a cyclical tale that has to be solved, or in the case of the best Japanese films imho never solved.
Great genre examples include; Phone (Korean), Ju-On as mentioned and then less well known examples such as Visible Secret, Tomie, Omen, Shutter etc.
